Ināra Mūrniece meets with the Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker in Vienna

(07.09.2021.)

A new generation, born in an independent state, has grown up in Latvia and Azerbaijan, and they are learning about our common history within the Soviet system from their families and literature. It is important that today’s youth study the recent history of their country and realise that independence cannot be taken for granted and must be defended, emphasised Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, in a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan (Milli Majlis) Sahiba Gafarova in Vienna.

The Speaker of the Saeima expressed her appreciation for the friendly relations and fruitful parliamentary dialogue between Latvia and Azerbaijan and highlighted the successful cooperation of the two countries within international organisations. Speaker Gafarova noted Azerbaijan’s interest in closer cooperation in many fields, especially education, which could open up new opportunities for students of both countries.

The two speakers also discussed the current situation in Latvia and Azerbaijan and the organisation of parliamentary work in their respective countries during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

Speaker Mūrniece is currently on a visit to Vienna, Austria, where she is participating in the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, the 13th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, and the First Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter‑Terrorism.
