Saeima appoints representative to the United States to strengthen transatlantic dialogue, regional security, and interparliamentary cooperation

(02.07.2025.)

To strengthen transatlantic ties and cooperation with the United States, the Saeima will henceforth have its own representative in Washington to work with the US Congress. This representative will be responsible for promoting Latvia’s interests and advocating for priorities essential to the entire region.

The Presidium of the Saeima has adopted a decision to appoint a parliamentary representative to the United States with the aim of reinforcing the relationship between the legislatures of both countries and ensuring that Latvia’s voice is heard more widely. Working jointly with colleagues from the Baltic States, the representative will help advance the defence of shared Baltic interests. It is crucial to strengthen cooperation with this strategic partner and, at the same time, foster unity among NATO Allies—particularly important in the current geopolitical context, as we work together to enhance regional security.

The representative’s task will be to represent the Saeima’s positions and interests in the United States, primarily in Congress; to maintain dialogue and promote cooperation with members of both chambers of Congress; and to support engagement with US-based Baltic organisations such as the Joint Baltic American National Committee, the World Federation of Free Latvians, and the American Latvian Association.

Having a dedicated representative will ensure regular information exchange and support for organising visits and events that foster interparliamentary cooperation and public diplomacy, including visits by US Congressional delegations to Latvia. The representative will also cooperate with the European Union Delegation in Washington and monitor developments in US domestic politics—particularly the Congressional agenda, its implications for relations with the European Union, NATO, and Latvia, and key security policy matters.

The Saeima already has a representative to the European Parliament. The new position, based at the Embassy of Latvia in the United States, will ensure that Latvia’s legislature is heard more prominently across the Atlantic and will help safeguard the essential interests of both Latvia and the broader Baltic region.
