Concluding the first day of her visit to Kyiv, the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, 14 January.

Expressing his gratitude for Latvia’s continued support, President Zelenskyy highlighted that Latvia has consistently been on the front lines of providing aid to Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy also thanked Speaker Mieriņa for organising the Third Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform in Riga, once again reaffirming to the international community that Crimea is and will remain part of sovereign Ukraine.

In turn, Speaker Mieriņa emphasised that Ukraine is currently safeguarding peace in the region by standing against the aggressor, Russia. “We can no longer afford to wait for someone else to act on our behalf. Europe must take the lead and set its own rules,” said the Speaker of the Saeima, underscoring that the Baltic voice in Europe is now stronger than ever.

The Speaker reaffirmed Latvia’s commitment to continue supporting Ukraine at all levels, stressing that true friends are tested in difficult times.

Speaker Mieriņa was accompanied on her visit to Ukraine by Deputy Speaker of the Saeima Antoņina Ņenaševa, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Ināra Mūrniece, Chair of the Defence, Internal Affairs, and Corruption Prevention Committee Raimonds Bergmanis, and Committee Secretary Jānis Skrastiņš, who also leads the parliamentary cooperation group with Ukraine.
