Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica debates the importance of independent media and support for Ukraine at the Warsaw Security Forum

(30.09.2025.)

From 29 to 30 September, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, , participated in the Warsaw Security Forum, which brings together senior policymakers, experts, and leaders from across the globe to debate key issues of European and international security. Kalniņa-Lukaševica took part in two panel discussions: “The Role of Media in the Democratic Shield: Between Anarchy, Political Control and Foreign Interference” and “Ukraine 2025 and Beyond: Parliamentary Strategies for Long-Term Support”.

In her address to the international audience, she emphasised the role of free and independent media in protecting democracy, particularly in the fight against disinformation and foreign interference.

“Independent media is our shield against propaganda and fake news. The media helps to uncover and identify manipulation. If we are serious about defending democracy, the protection of media independence must be taken equally seriously,” Kalniņa-Lukaševica underlined.

She also stressed that one of the most pressing challenges today is striking the right balance between freedom of speech and citizens’ right to free and uninfluenced choices during elections. At the same time, she noted that the fight against foreign interference must not become a pretext for censorship.

In the discussion on the future of Ukraine, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima reiterated Latvia’s steadfast and principled support for Ukraine. “Latvia has made a significant contribution towards Ukraine’s struggle to maintain its independence and sovereignty by providing military, political, and social support. But it is also our duty to continue delivering comprehensive assistance—from arms supplies to the reconstruction of this devastated country,” she said.

Kalniņa-Lukaševica also urged participants to recognise that “Russia’s hybrid assaults on NATO states are not accidental and should not be considered less dangerous. Drones breaching NATO airspace and deliberate violations of national borders are obvious escalations by Russia. Many of these are direct manipulative attacks on our democracies—sharply experienced in Moldova and now directed at other countries as well. We cannot constantly raise our tolerance for this so-called ‘new normal’. We must all clearly acknowledge the gravity of the situation.”

Since its launch in 2014, the Warsaw Security Forum has grown into one of the most influential international conferences, serving as a platform where allied politicians, experts, and civil society leaders convene. This year’s discussions focused on containing Russian aggression, strengthening NATO, and promoting democratic resilience worldwide.
