On Thursday, 18 September, the Saeima granted Latvian citizenship to Ukrainian athlete Eduard Tsybulia.

Eduard Tsybulia moved to Latvia with his family in 2022 after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He has represented Latvia in top-level international taekwondo competitions and has demonstrated outstanding sporting achievements. The athlete held first place among all cadets in his weight category in the world and European rankings.

Tsybulia has linked his future with Latvia and wishes to represent it at the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, said Gunārs Kūtris, Chair of the Saeima Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion Committee, responsible for the draft law. At the Committee meeting, Tsybulia gave the pledge of allegiance to the Republic of Latvia.
