Imants Lieģis: Close cooperation between the EU and the NATO is needed for solving crisis in Libya
In order to put an end to bloody clashes between opposition forces and forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi, closer cooperation between NATO and the European Union is needed, thinks Imants Lieģis, Chairman of the European Affairs Committee and Head of the Latvian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Speaker and Swedish MP discuss the involvement of youths in politics
On 4 March, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Anton Abele, a Swedish MP of Latvian descent, and discussed how to encourage young people to become involved in public processes.

The Economic Committee supports limiting the power of dominant retailers
On Wednesday, 2 March, members of the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee of the Saeima supported and submitted for the second reading the amendments to the Competition Law which will force retailers that are in a dominant position to shorten deadlines for their settlement of payments with manufacturers.
In preparation for the 20th anniversary of de facto restoration of Latvia’s independence, the Saeima invites children and youths to take part in a contest of drawings to design a logo that symbolises this significant event. On 21 August 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia, which restored the de facto independence of Latvia and clearly marked the return of Latvia into the family of Western European countries.
Imants Lieģis: Violence against Libyan civilians is condemnable
Imants Lieģis, head of the Latvian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, condemns the violence inflicted by the Libyan state on its civilians. He stated that the NATO PA is planning to officially censure Libya regarding this matter.
Imants Lieģis, Chairman of the European Affairs Committee, believes that Latvia, which will be the European Union’s presiding country in 2015, should define in due time the EU policy priorities on which it will focus.
The Speaker of the Saeima calls on shadows to be active citizens and to take part in public affairs
On Wednesday, 16 February, during Job Shadow Day while telling schoolchildren about the work of the parliament, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, called on them to be active citizens and to start taking part in public affairs, and she expressed hope that active young people will return to the Saeima as politicians.
MPs meet with the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities
On Monday, 14 February, Ingrīda Circene (Unity), Chairperson of the Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee of the Saeima, MPs Lolita Čigāne (Unity) and Rita Strode (For a Good Latvia) met with Knut Vollebaek, OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, to discuss the progress in integration of society.
On Wednesday, 9 February, a majority of the Budget and Finance (Taxation) Committee approved the concept of improving the financing system in the health-care sector and thus to ensure fair access to state-funded medical services and to combat the shadow economy.
