Saeima extends Latvian military participation in Afghanistan

(16.12.2011.)

On Thursday, 15 December, the Saeima decided to extend the service of soldiers from the Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

The term for the NAF’s participation in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan is extended until 12 October 2012, based on the mandate issued by the UN Security Council (SC) – UNSC Resolution No. S/RES/2011(2011) of 12 October 2011.

On 22 September the 10th Saeima delegated the Cabinet of Ministers the temporary right to decide on the extension of the term for the participation of the NAF in the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. This was necessary in order to ensure legitimacy of the NAF mission in Afghanistan in the period while the 10th Saeima was being replaced by the 11th Saeima and the UNSC resolution was not yet issued.

Currently there are 184 Latvian soldiers serving in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
