Latvia and Estonia are united by a joint vision on important regional and international affairs, and our common objective is to promote the safety, prosperity and development of the Baltic region, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on 14 October during her meeting with Alar Karis, President of Estonia.

The Speaker of the Saeima congratulated Karis on his inauguration and expressed her appreciation for the fact that the new President’s first foreign visit was to Latvia, followed by a visit to Finland on the same day. This is a testament to our close relations that are based on trust and solidarity, said Mūrniece, highlighting that Latvia and Estonia are strong partners, neighbours and allies, and both countries will continue their active and diverse cooperation.

Security and defence of the Baltic region is a top shared priority. Now that the region is facing hybrid threats at the Belarusian border, it is crucial to strengthen our internal security capabilities, noted the Speaker of the Saeima.

Both officials discussed cooperation in significant regional infrastructure and digital solution projects. We highly appreciate our cooperation in the Rail Baltica project, said Mūrniece.

Speaker Mūrniece noted the constructive role that Latvia and Estonia have always played in the strengthening of Europe; both countries intend to continue this process, especially in the digital sector and regarding the development of green economy.

Latvia and Estonia have close cooperation in international formats as well, highlighted Mūrniece, mentioning the Baltic Assembly and the Three Seas Initiative as examples.

In her meeting with the President of Estonia Alar Karis, the Speaker of the Saeima was joined by Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima.
