On Thursday, 24 September, the Saeima approved the participation of Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) personnel in international operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision provides for the deployment of Latvian military personnel to participate in the US‑led coalition operations and in the multinational operation led by the United Kingdom and France until 1 September 2028 with the aim of reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
In response to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, both the coalition led by the US and the one led by the United Kingdom and France decided to launch military operations whose primary objective is to restore and safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. It has been contaminated with various types of naval mines, and Latvia could potentially contribute to their clearance.
Latvia plans to deploy a NAF Naval Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, as well as NAF staff officers and instructors, with up to 20 personnel participating in both operations. The Latvian contingent would take part only in mine countermeasure operations and the coordination of mine-clearance activities in the Strait, as well as broader efforts to reopen the Strait and ensure unimpeded transit rights in it. Latvia will not engage in activities that would support the United States as a belligerent party in the conflict with Iran.
Latvia’s participation in the multinational military operations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz would allow the NAF to further develop its capabilities, demonstrate Latvia’s contribution to international maritime security, and serve as a direct confirmation of support for and solidarity with Latvia’s strategic partners.
