On Thursday, 20 August, the Saeima reviewed the new Immigration Law for the second time, specifying its provisions.

The Saeima adopted the new Immigration Law in its final reading in June, however the President of Latvia did not proclaim the law as passed and referred it back to the Parliament for a second review.

The new Law stipulates stricter immigration regulation and security measures. The current immigration regulation was thoroughly reviewed to strengthen state security, ensure more effective migration control, and at the same time comply with the legal requirements of the European Union.

The aim of the new Immigration Law is to establish a clear, transparent, and efficient immigration system, covering the entry, residence, employment, integration, and expulsion procedures of third-country nationals, as well as to reduce the risks of immigration fraud and illegal employment.

The Draft Law also clarifies the procedure for granting visas and residence permits by introducing clearer deadlines and procedural arrangements, as well as expanding the grounds for refusal and revocation in cases where a threat to public order or security is identified. It also provides for stricter pre-entry control by introducing an obligation to provide information on the purpose of entry and the conditions of stay.
