Saeima makes changes to the composition of the Presidium

On Thursday, 4 June, the Saeima made changes to the composition of the Saeima Presidium.

Linda Matisone was elected Deputy Speaker of the Saeima. Previously, this position was held by Antoņina Ņenaševa, who asked the Saeima to release her from the post.

Jānis Grasbergs was elected Secretary of the Saeima. Previously, this position was held by Edvards Smiltēns, who temporarily laid down his Member of Parliament’s mandate upon assuming the duties of Minister for Justice. Mr Grasbergs had until now served as Deputy Secretary of the Saeima and requested to be released from that position.

Antoņina Ņenaševa will henceforth serve as Deputy Secretary of the Saeima.

The Speaker of the 14th Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, will continue to perform her duties, and Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica will continue in the position of Deputy Speaker.

The Presidium of the Saeima consists of the Speaker of the Saeima, two Deputy Speakers, the Secretary and the Deputy Secretary.

In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Saeima, elections of the members of the Presidium are held by open ballot, with Members voting using ballot papers rather than the electronic voting system.

Members of the Presidium determine the internal order and the course of work of the Saeima, provide opinions and advance submitted matters in all cases provided for in the Rules of Procedure, draw up the agenda of Saeima sittings, meet with foreign officials, and perform a range of other duties.

The Presidium determines the internal rules and work procedures of the Saeima, gives its opinions regarding draft laws submitted to it and forwards them as prescribed by the Rules of Procedure of the Saeima, prepares agenda of plenary sittings, meet with foreign officials, and perform a range of other duties.
