Zanda Kalniņa‑Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, participated in the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Tuesday, 12 May. Within the framework of the Summit, she took part in the high-level panel discussion “AI, Power & Democracy: Who Sets the Rules in a New World (Dis)Order?”, which brought together political leaders and technology industry representatives to assess the growing influence of artificial intelligence on democracy and governance.
“Artificial intelligence offers significant opportunities for economic growth, yet its application also poses serious risks to democracy. We must learn to use the potential of artificial intelligence to boost productivity and prosperity while safeguarding elections and societal resilience against its malicious use,” emphasised Z. Kalniņa‑Lukaševica.
The Deputy Speaker noted that artificial intelligence is already reshaping information flows, political communication, and public trust while creating new vulnerabilities—particularly through the spread of disinformation and the misuse of technologies.
“It is essential to strengthen regulation, invest in digital literacy and critical thinking within society, and foster close cooperation with the private sector,” stressed the Deputy Speaker.
The discussion also focused on how to ensure flexible and effective governance in the context of rapid technological change, while upholding democratic values, reinforcing institutional resilience, and maintaining public trust.
Zanda Kalniņa‑Lukaševica affirmed Latvia’s readiness to actively contribute to international dialogue on artificial intelligence governance, with the aim of strengthening democratic institutions and promoting public confidence in the digital era.
The Copenhagen Democracy Summit is an annual international forum organised by the Alliance of Democracies Foundation, bringing together leaders from politics, the private sector, and the media, as well as civil society activists, to debate the state of democracy and global challenges posed by authoritarianism.
