On Tuesday, 31 March, Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, met at the Saeima with Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Singapore, to discuss opportunities for closer cooperation between partners in Europe and Asia. This is the first time a Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore has went on a visit to Latvia.
“Latvia and Singapore are united by respect for a rules-based international order. It is in our interests to promote cooperation in economy and technology. For Singapore, Latvia offers a strategic platform for cooperation with the European Union, including a testbed for emerging technologies. In today’s complex world, it is of particular importance to deepen cooperation between like-minded partners in Europe and Asia,” underlined Deputy Speaker Kalniņa-Lukaševica.
Both officials discussed opportunities for closer economic cooperation, emphasising emerging technologies and artificial intelligence-driven solutions. Latvia and Singapore share similar values, including high regard for a rules-based international order and sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. Latvia borders an aggressor state and recognises Russia’s attempts to influence other states through propaganda and disinformation. Deputy Speaker Kalniņa-Lukaševica underlined that Latvia appreciates Singapore’s support for Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore also met with Kaspars Briškens, Chair of the Saeima Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee.
