The veil of illusion has fallen – Russia is Europe’s largest threat, said Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, while meeting Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Marshal of the Sejm – the Parliament of Poland –, in Warsaw on Tuesday, 30 March. Speaker Mieriņa is on an introductory visit in Warsaw. Marshal Czarzasty took office in November 2025. 

Latvia and Poland share a deep and strategic partnership in all areas, particularly in security and defence. The Speaker of the Saeima emphasised Poland’s contribution to strengthening security in the region, as well as to the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia and the Baltic Air Policing Mission. Together we are protecting our external border–the border of NATO and the EU, said Speaker Mieriņa, highlighting the contributions to defence and the close cooperation of both countries in border protection: “In light of the hybrid threats and the situation at the border, it is crucial to continue the close coordination between our services.”

While discussing regional and economic cooperation, both parties agreed that the full potential of the speakers of parliaments has not been fully utilised in foreign policy. Speaker Mieriņa also emphasised the support Poland provides for Polish schools in Latvia, as well as the potential of Polish banks entering Latvia. This would strengthen economic cooperation between the countries at a time when regional resilience is of particular importance. Marshal Czarzasty invited Latvia to participate in a high-level security conference on 10–11 May 2027.

While discussing transatlantic cooperation, Speaker Mieriņa emphasised the military presence of the U.S. in Europe, including in the Baltic States. The U.S. and close transatlantic cooperation is an indispensable element in European security, as well as in the support for Ukraine – it serves as a crucial factor for deterring Russia in addition to the presence of allied forces.
