Moldova is an example to other EU candidate countries, said Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, during a meeting with Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Parliament of Moldova, in Chisinau on Monday, 2 February. Speaker Mieriņa is visiting Moldova this week with her Lithuanian and Estonian counterparts. 

The Speaker of the Saeima emphasised excellent parliamentary cooperation with Moldova. She welcomed the establishment of a Moldova-Latvia inter-parliamentary friendship group following the parliamentary elections in Moldova. She also highlighted that Latvia will continue to support Moldova’s integration in the European Union (EU).

“We strongly support Moldova’s comprehensive reform process and commend the country’s determination to pursue it further. We are very familiar with the challenges your country faces. At an EU and bilateral level Latvia supports boosting Moldova’s security and resilience, the country’s integration in the EU, and the implementation of reforms,” said Speaker Mieriņa, affirming that the Parliament of Latvia will offer continued support to the Parliament of Moldova, including practical training. The Saeima has organised practical training for the Members of the National Assembly of Moldova since 2024.

The Baltic Speakers also emphasised that the EU should immediately open the first cluster in accession negotiations with Moldova, as well as with Ukraine. The Baltic Speakers thanked Moldova’s support for Ukraine, noting that it is crucial for the security of the entire Europe. The Baltic Speakers congratulated Moldova once more with the victory of pro-European forces in the election that took place in autumn 2025.

In March 2022, Moldova applied for EU membership and was granted EU candidate status in June 2022. Official accession negotiations began in June 2024.

Tomorrow, the Baltic Speakers will address Moldovan MPs and meet with the chairs of all political groups represented in the Parliament of Moldova. The Baltic Speakers are also scheduled to meet Maia Sandu, the President of Moldova; Alexandru Munteanu, the Prime Minister of Moldova; Cristina Gherasimov, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration; and other officials to discuss Moldova’s reform process, regional security situation, and the next steps in European integration.

The visit of Speaker Mieriņa will conclude with a trip to the Călărași region of Moldova where she will meet with local officials, entrepreneurs, and residents to discuss regional development, as well as the opportunities and challenges associated with EU integration.
