Draft law on Latvia’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention returned to the Foreign Affairs Committee for reconsideration

(05.11.2025.)

On Wednesday, 5 November, the Saeima returned the draft law on Latvia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (the Istanbul Convention) to the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee for reconsideration.

The Parliament ruled that the deadline for submitting proposals shall be 1 November 2026.

The Saeima adopted the law on Latvia’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention on 30 October 2025. Following the decision, the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, called on the Parliament to review it once more.

When a draft law is being reconsidered, the provisions for considering a draft law in the third reading are applied. During this stage, only the objections raised by the President and the proposals related to these objections are considered.
