“Despite the continued aggression by Russia, Latvian society remains tireless and unwavering in its support for Ukraine,” underlined Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa on Friday, 29 August, addressing her colleagues from the Baltic and Nordic countries at the annual NB8 Speakers’ Meeting in Tallinn, Estonia.

“Latvian society continues to actively support Ukraine, both morally and practically. Since 2022, together we have donated almost one billion euros,” emphasised D. Mieriņa.

In discussions with the other NB8 Speakers, D. Mieriņa highlighted the example set by this region in terms of morality and the rule of law. “Russia must understand the inevitability of punishment. War criminals will have to answer for their crimes against the people of Ukraine,” said the Speaker of the Saeima.

The Speaker also stressed that every effort must be made to return the abducted Ukrainian children to their homes.

On the subject of Eurointegration, D. Mieriņa stressed that the accession processes of Ukraine and Moldova to the European Union must not be separated.

Today, the Speakers of the Baltic and Nordic parliaments are discussing the strengthening of regional cooperation, support for Ukraine in the context of peace talks, tightening sanctions pressure and Russia’s isolation, as well as the transatlantic dialogue.

This morning, the Nordic and Baltic Speakers also met with Estonian President Alar Karis to discuss regional security and defence issues, emphasising fair and equal peace talks for Ukraine.

The Baltic and Nordic countries are bound by close cooperation in the NB8 format, which brings together five Nordic countries – Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden – and three Baltic countries – Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. The NB8 framework provides for regular meetings of prime ministers, parliamentarians, ministers and other officials. It also includes traditional visits to countries outside the region to highlight issues of democracy, peace and the rule of law, as well as to exchange best practices in the reform process.
