“For three and a half years, the barbaric occupying army has brutally sought to seize the lands of the Ukrainian people and has filled its skies with drone and missile attacks. Yet we believe that very soon the people of Ukraine will free themselves from the enemy’s clutches and celebrate their freedom every single day. But for that to happen, we—Ukraine’s friends and supporters—must do everything in our power to ensure that peace talks are fair and balanced. The aggressor, who has violated every moral and legal principle, must be duly punished,” said Daiga Mieriņa, Speaker of the Saeima, at the event “Sunflower Path” by the Latvia Freedom Monument to celebrate the Independence Day of Ukraine on Tuesday, 24 August.
The Speaker of the Saeima underlined that Latvia must remind the whole world loud and clear who the aggressor is, and who is fighting for freedom and values. “We must maintain pressure against Russia in the form of sanctions. Without full accountability for its crimes, it has no right to return to the international community,” said Speaker Mieriņa, affirming that Ukraine is Europe, Ukrainians are Europeans, and that the fight against the aggressor is also a fight for Europe’s freedoms and values.
“The entire civilised world admires the heroism and courage of the Ukrainian people in confronting the despicable aggressor, and we anticipate that in the near future Ukraine will become a full member of the European Union. We therefore fully support the opening of new negotiation chapters as soon as possible. The process of reforms achieved by Ukraine under wartime is remarkable, and must continue in the same intensive and effective manner,” the Speaker of the Saeima said.
Speaker Mieriņa reaffirmed that Latvia stands—and will continue to stand—with the people of Ukraine, and that our people will continue to express compassion, solidarity, and humanitarian spirit, and to provide support to Ukraine’s army and civilians. “Countless deliveries of humanitarian and military aid, vehicles, drones, and other essentials have arrived in Ukraine. Latvia is also committed to the reconstruction of the Chernihiv Oblast, where many of our non-governmental organisations are making a significant contribution,” the Speaker noted.
“Ukraine’s independence is symbolised by the blue and yellow flag, which tells the story of its fertile land and clear skies. I am convinced that Ukraine will also overcome this terrible war, so that its fertile fields and blue skies may soon be sheltered by peace—a just and lasting peace,” concluded Speaker Mieriņa.
