Saeima delegation arrives in Ukraine for official visit

(30.05.2025.)

A delegation of Members of the Saeima has arrived in Ukraine to reaffirm steadfast support for the country in its fight against the aggressor and to gain first-hand insight into Latvia’s assistance projects in the war-affected nation.

The delegation visited the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, where they met with Deputy Speaker Olena Kondratiuk and members of the interparliamentary friendship group.

The Ukrainian side emphasised that Latvia is a leader in solidarity and the volunteer movement. “We are grateful to Latvia for its unprecedented support across all sectors,” said Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Olena Kondratiuk. Latvia’s assistance is tangible and highly visible — militarily, politically, and in humanitarian terms, including the treatment and rehabilitation of Ukrainian soldiers and support for children affected by the war.

Both sides agreed that Ukraine urgently needs strong international political backing to achieve a just peace and obtain long-term security guarantees.

Head of the Latvian delegation Jānis Skrastiņš reaffirmed unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, stressing that any negotiations regarding a ceasefire, peace agreement, or the status of occupied territories are matters for Ukraine alone to decide.

The parliamentarians agreed that a key priority is to impose international restrictions on Russia’s energy exports — including efforts to dismantle the so-called “shadow fleet” operating in the Baltic Sea — in order to significantly curb funding for Russia’s war machine.

Members of the Saeima reiterated Latvia’s full support for Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance, expressing hope that the day is near when the NATO flag will fly over Ukraine’s parliament. As Secretary of the Saeima Edvards Smiltēns underlined, Ukraine needs NATO membership — but NATO, in turn, needs Ukraine’s strength and experience even more.

The visiting delegation includes Secretary of the Saeima Edvards Smiltēns, Deputy Secretary Jānis Grasbergs, Chair of the Saeima Group for Promoting Cooperation with the Parliament of Ukraine Jānis Skrastiņš, and group members Skaidrīte Ābrama, Raimonds Bergmanis, Dāvis Mārtiņš Daugavietis, and Linda Liepiņa.
