A delegation of Members of the Saeima has inaugurated a modular primary healthcare centre in the village of Stepkivka, Mykolaiv Oblast, Ukraine. The centre was established in cooperation with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the World Health Organization, with funding provided by the Latvian state. The total investment amounts to 200,000 EUR.
The facility complies with all modern standards and will offer outpatient medical services to residents of the surrounding area. It can accommodate up to three doctors working simultaneously, providing as many as 30 consultations per day.
The operation of such centres is particularly vital in the context of Ukraine’s medical infrastructure, which has suffered significant damage as a result of ongoing warfare. Ensuring access to healthcare not only delivers essential services to the population but also strengthens public trust in the state and encourages displaced residents to return. Over 30 modular medical centres of this kind have already been established across Ukraine, especially in frontline regions. As the situation on the front lines evolves, these container-type units can be quickly relocated to safer locations.
The centre is capable of operating independently, as it is equipped with a backup electricity generator, a water tank, and a septic tank.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the World Health Organization has verified more than 2,300 attacks on healthcare in Ukraine — including strikes on infrastructure, medical transport, healthcare workers, and patients. These attacks have claimed over 200 lives and injured more than 700 people. Russia continues to carry out such assaults despite the fact that healthcare infrastructure is protected under international humanitarian law.
