Saeima supports declaring state of emergency on Latvia-Russia border

(29.09.2022.)

On Thursday, 29 September, the Saeima supported the government decision on declaring a state of emergency in the Alūksne, Balvi, and Ludza districts and border crossing points, as well as on closing the Pededze border crossing point.

The state of emergency is declared until 27 December. The decision was reached as a response to the Russian Federation’s decision to announce partial mobilisation aimed to intensify the hostilities in the territory of Ukraine, in view of the necessity to prevent possible threats to the internal security of Latvia.

Pursuant to the Decision, the State Border Guard is tasked with enhancing the surveillance of the Latvia-Russia border as well as intensifying border checks of Russian citizens entering Latvia. The Decision stipulates that the State Border Guard will be assisted by the National Armed Forces, State Police, and the State Security Service in ensuring border control.
