Saeima adopts a resolution on the protection of rights of Kristīne Misāne

(17.01.2020.)

On Thursday, 16 January, the Saeima adopted a resolution on the protection of rights of Kristīne Misāne, calling on the Parliament of Denmark and law enforcement authorities of Denmark to support the competent Latvian authorities in finding a solution for Kristīne Misāne, a citizen of the Republic of Latvia, not be extradited to the Republic of South Africa for prosecution.

In the resolution, the MPs noted that Latvian citizen Kristīne Misāne is currently detained in Denmark and Danish judicial authorities have ruled that Kristīne Misāne is to be extradited to the Republic of South Africa for prosecution of offences allegedly committed in the Republic of South Africa.

Additionally, the resolution highlighted Section 98 of the Constitution of Latvia, which stipulates that everyone having a Latvian passport shall be protected by the State of Latvia, as well as reports by international organisations on the conditions in South African places of detention as incompatible with human rights.

Considering the close diplomatic relations between Latvia and Denmark and successful existing cooperation in the area of law enforcement between the competent authorities of Latvia and Denmark, the MPs call on the Parliament of Denmark and law enforcement authorities of Denmark to cooperate.
