Saeima appoints Jānis Maizītis as Director of the Constitution Protection Bureau

On Thursday, 14 March, the Saeima appointed Jānis Maizītis as Director of the Constitution Protection Bureau (CPB).

59 MPs voted in favour of Maizītis whilst 31 were against.

Prior to being approved to the position of Director of the CPB, Jānis Maizītis was the National Security Adviser to the President of Latvia and the Secretary of the National Security Council. Before that, for 10 years Maizītis was the Prosecutor General; he has also worked as a chief prosecutor and an investigator. He has been an adviser to the Minister for Justice, and he has gained extensive international experience. The new Director of the CPB has a master’s degree in law from the University of Latvia. Currently Maizītis is a doctoral student in the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.  

The term of the incumbent Director of the CPB, Jānis Kažociņš, ends on 2 May this year.
