We are allies, and by joining our efforts we can also overcome the political challenges within our countries caused by Russia’s was in Ukraine. Helping the war refugees, fighting the influence of the Kremlin propaganda on the society, searching for solutions to economic and energy sector shocks-the entire Europe is facing these internal challenges, stated Inese Lībiņa‑Egnere, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, on Wednesday, 20 July, during the meeting with the delegation of the Landtag of the State of Hesse at the Saeima.

At the same time, right now, all our partners must be resolute and, above all, prioritise the values uniting us as member states of the European Union and NATO-democracy, human rights, and solidarity. Joint decisions must be made in respectful dialogue among all the partners, said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima.

Members of the Landtag of Hesse inquired about Latvia’s experience of being located right next to the aggressor countries, the current situation regarding receiving refugees from Ukraine, as well as current political affairs in view of the upcoming Saeima election.

Discussing the influence of Russia’s propaganda, Lībiņa‑Egnere emphasised that the prolonged access to the Kremlin’s information space has created a completely warped and upside-down view of reality for a significant part of the society. At the same time, Latvia has offered refuge to many independent media channels from Russia who can no longer work in their home country, and the content produced by these media is an important contribution to Latvia’s media landscape.

Discussing the experience of the two countries in receiving refugees from Ukraine, the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima admitted that Latvia was experiencing the largest refugee crisis in its history, and, in a way, this was a test of the humanity of our society. Already from the first days of the war, the people of Latvia have shown willingness to help the victims, hosting refugees in their own families and providing the necessary material support.
