Saeima supports ban on fur farming

(22.09.2022.)

On Thursday, 22 September, the Saeima supported in the third and final reading amendments to the Animal Protection Law, providing that breeding animals for the sole purpose of obtaining fur is prohibited.

According to the explanatory note of the Draft Law prepared by the MPs, the breeding and slaughtering of animals for the sake of obtaining fur is an unethical, cruel, and disappearing type of entrepreneurship. The explanatory note also refers to a survey concluding that 63 percent of people in Latvia do not support breeding and slaughtering animals for the sake of obtaining fur.

The amendments adopted by the Saeima provide that, starting from 1 January 2028, breeding and keeping farm animals is forbidden if the sole purpose of breeding and keeping them is to obtain fur.
