Saeima supports reduced management fee for separately collected organic waste

(31.03.2022.)

On Thursday, 31 March, the Saeima supported in the third and final reading amendments to the Waste Management Law that set out to reduce the management fee for separately collected organic waste.

Krišjānis Feldmanis, Chair of the Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee, which is responsible for advancing the draft law in the Saeima, had previously stated: “We hope that these amendments will encourage our citizens to sort waste more actively, including the sorting of biodegradable waste.”

From now on, the local governments will establish the management fee for separately collected organic waste in the amount of 80% of the management fee for non-sorted household waste.

The local governments and their selected waste management facilities will have until 30 December 2022 to amend the agreements on household waste management regarding the amount of fee for unsorted household waste and organic waste.

The Law will enter into force on the day following its promulgation.
