Baltic and Polish Speakers: support for Ukraine must not subside

(29.03.2022.)

On Tuesday, 29 March, during a meeting in the framework of the Conference of Speakers of the European Union Parliaments in Slovenia, the chairs of the Parliaments of the Baltic States and Poland agreed that although for more than a month Ukraine has heroically defended itself against the Russian aggression, this brutal war must not become an accepted reality, and the military, political, and humanitarian support for Ukraine on the part of the democratic world must not subside. Meanwhile, Russia has to pay a high price for the war that it has begun.

The Speakers acknowledged that Ukraine is currently forced to use weapons in defending the fundamental values on which the European Union is founded — freedom, human dignity, democracy. Ukraine deserves to become a candidate for the European Union, it must be given a clear European perspective. “Ukraine has a moral right to be one of us. Ukrainian people are spilling their blood for a place in Europe," said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima.

During the meeting, the Speaker of the Saeima highly appreciated the leadership of Poland in providing support and asylum to war refugees, as well as assisting Ukraine in the fight against the aggressor. Throughout our region, not only governments, but also societies, have mobilised to do their best in helping the Ukrainian people.

Today’s four-party meeting was attended by Elżbieta Witek, Marshal of the Polish Sejm, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, Jüri Ratas, Speaker of the Estonian Riigikogu, and Viktorija Čmilytė‑Nielsen, Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas.
