Saeima supports granting EU candidate status to Ukraine

(03.03.2022.)

On Thursday, 3 March, the Saeima unanimously adopted a Statement on granting the European Union candidate status to Ukraine. Members of the Saeima recognise that every possible option should be employed to help Ukraine withstand the fight to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to the Statement, Ukraine is exercising its rights to determine its own future and is fighting for European values by resisting the military aggression and wide-scale invasion by the Russian Federation.

The parliamentarians consider it particularly crucial and necessary to express explicit support for Ukraine’s goal of becoming a Member State of the European Union.

The Statement calls on EU institutions to work on granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine as soon as possible. In the Statement, MPs also call on all EU Member States to support Ukraine’s efforts to become a full-fledged Member State of the EU and to support granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine.

The Saeima maintains that granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine would be a crucial signal of EU solidarity, attesting that Ukraine is a part of Europe, and is now fighting for European values valiantly with all its might.

The MPs affirm the readiness of Latvia to provide broad support for Ukraine on its path towards becoming a full-fledged Member State of the European Union.
