Speaker Smiltēns: Deliberate destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine is a terrorist act

(06.06.2023.)

“Every day, every hour, every minute that Russia occupies Ukrainian land, it commits crimes and atrocities there, killing civilians. Today was just another demonstration of the Russian modus operandi. Deliberately destroying the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine is an act of ecological terrorism. Russia is a terrorist state,” stressed Edvards Smiltēns, Speaker of the Saeima, in a statement released on Tuesday, 6 June.

The Speaker underlined that we must redouble our efforts at assisting Ukraine in completely pushing Russia out of its territory, as quickly as possible and with no caveats. “We have to redouble our efforts at ensuring justice and accountability for all the crimes committed, including by the top leadership of Russia, by way of establishing an ad hoc international tribunal and redirecting frozen assets of Russia to the reconstruction of Ukraine,” noted Smiltēns.

The Speaker of the Saeima emphasised that Russia’s latest act of terrorism will bring humanitarian disaster to Ukraine, its population, and the world. “Ukraine needs our immediate assistance. Humanitarian, political, economic, military. All civilised nations that value human life need to unite to stop the brutal Russian terror,” said Speaker Smiltēns.

Today, on 6 June, Russia blew up the Nova Kakhovka dam in the occupied Kherson Oblast, flooding vast territories in southern Ukraine.
