Saeima to hold presidential elections on 31 May

(29.05.2023.)

On Wednesday, 31 May, the Saeima will hold an extraordinary sitting, scheduled to start at 9:00 with presidential elections on agenda. Members of Parliament have nominated Elīna Pinto, Uldis Pīlēns, and Edgars Rinkēvičs as presidential candidates.

The Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committee of the Saeima has submitted a report to the Saeima informing that the nominated candidates comply with the requirements set out in the Constitution of Latvia and the Law on the Election of the President.

Before the vote, parliamentarians may hold a debate. The President of State is elected using ballot papers.

If in the first round none of the candidates collect at least 51 votes, all candidates proceed to the second round of voting. If no candidate is elected in this round either, the voting proceeds to the next round, each time eliminating the candidate with the fewest votes. If in the final round of voting a candidate fails to collect 51 votes, new elections must be held.
