Saeima to hold presidential elections on 29 May

(27.05.2019.)

On Wednesday, 29 May, the Saeima will hold an extraordinary sitting, scheduled to start at 10:00 with presidential elections on agenda.

Members of Parliament have nominated Egils Levits, Juris Jansons and Didzis Šmits as presidental candidates.

The Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committee of the Saeima has submitted a report to the Saeima informing that the nominated candidates comply with the requirements set out in the Law on Election of the President of Latvia.

Before the vote, parliamentarians may hold a debate.

This will be the first time when the president of State is elected in open ballot, using ballot papers.

If in the first round none of the candidates collects at least 51 votes, all candidates proceed to the second round of voting. If no candidate is elected in this round either, the voting proceeds to the next round each time eliminating the candidate with the fewest votes. If in the final round of voting a candidate fails to collect 51 votes, new elections must be held.
