Fridrihs Vesmanis
(1875-1942) - Chairman of the First Saeima until 17 March 1925 and Latvian Ambassador to Great Britain until 1932. After returning to Latvia he became a member of the Senate (Supreme Court). In 1934 F. Vesmanis retired from the Senate.F. Vesmanis was born on 15 April 1875 in Rundale. After the graduation from the Jelgava Gymnasium he studied law at the Tartu University. He joined the political movement Jauna strava ("The New Current") and worked in the editorial board of the newspaper Dienas Lapa ("The Daily Paper").
After the arrests of 1897, he emigrated to England where since 1899 he was in charge of the periodicals Socialdemokrats ("The Social Democrat") and Latviesu stradnieks ("The Latvian Worker"). In 1904 F. Vesmanis returned to Latvia. In 1909 he graduated from the St. Petersburg University. After the graduation the started his career as a lawyer in Jelgava, where in 1920 he was elected mayor of the city.
F. Vesmanis was a member of the People's Council and a deputy of the Constitutional Assembly. He was elected to the First Saeima. In 1941 he was deported to the USSR where he died in 1942.
